The Biscuit Brothers Fine Arts Farm Summer Camp

Well we just finished our first week of summer camp and something interesting happened. Every day at the Biscuit Brothers Fine Arts Farm Summer Camp we start by gathering at “The Singing Tree” to begin our day with a song or two. I go around and ask the campers what song would they like to hear always assuming it would be “Old MacDonald had a Farm” or “Bingo”…to my surprise it was always something like Katy Perry’s “Roar” or PSY’s “Gangnam Style.” Uhhgg.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that the young kids take interest in today’s music but they’re missing something very valuable in not knowing or wanting to sing the folk songs of the past most of us grew up with. I know they may seem like simple silly songs but did you know the song “Shoe Fly Don’t Bother Me” was commissioned by Abraham Lincoln to dance to in the White House? Or that “Erie Canal” is about the grueling challenges of the day traveling that actual river?

American children’s folk music help us understand our people, values and history. We should learn them, teach them, embrace them and share them. Wouldn’t you hate it if in 100 years scientists finally unlocked the secret to that age old question…”What does the fox say?’ Just sayin’.

There is still room available for full and half day Summer Camps for grades K-5. Come explore the magic of Music, Theater, Art and Dance. There will be 60’s week, Movie Magic week, even Pirate week! Early drop off and late pick up also available. Now it’s your turn to… “Go Make Music”… and Theater, Art, Dance and much more!
